ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Garlider is a husband & wife organic farmstead located in Velturno/Fedlthurns, a tiny alpine village nestled in the northerly reaches of Alto-Adige / South-Tyrol, the bilingual region in north/eastern Italy bordering on Austria. Christian Kerschbaumer is the young owner of this emerging winery, awarded last year the prestigious Three Glasses by Italy’s influential wine-guide Gambero Rosso.

Christian and his father Alois have been selling the estate-grown grapes to the local cooperative cellar for quite some years before taking the decision to vinify the crop on their own in year 2000. Christian and Alois take care of all activities in the vineyard and the cellar. Garlider estate vineyards consist of roughly 5 Ha. planted with a bunch of white-berry varieties that are traditional in the area, like Gruner Veltliner, Gewurztraminer, Muller-Thurgau, Sylvaner and Pinot Grigio.

The various parcels are situated on the steep south-facing mountain slopes that surround the cellar (600 to 800 mt. asl from bottom to top). The soil is rocky with a thin superficial layer of clay, intermixed with fragments of weathered schist and quartz crystals. The elevated day/night temperature variations recorded throughout the harvest season from early September to the first week of October make for vibrant, nervy white wines infused with stony minerality and cool fruit on the nose and a refreshing, lively acidity on the palate.

Garlider is a certified organic grape grower since 1992, as Christian Kerschbaumer is adamant in his resolution to manage the family vineyards (and the neighbouring apple orchard, too) in accordance to the principles of biologic viticulture (minimal use of copper sulphate and no use whatsoever of chemical pesticides or other herbicides). As of the 2004 vintage all wines chez Garlider are fermented with ambient yeasts.
