Ciavolich

Ciavolich

About

Ciavolich is a family-owned estate in Abruzzo, Italy, initially based in Loreto Aprutino. In the past, the Ciavolichs were wool merchants who arrived in Miglianico in 1500 and 1853 – this is where it all began in building the family’s first cellar. Located on the top of a hill, Miglianico, between Pescara and Ortona; from here, you can see the Adriatic Sea. The primary production is today in Loreto Aprutino, located in Contrada Salmacina. They have a total of 35 hectares of vineyards and, in addition, three hectares of olive groves. The vines planted are split between the Pergola Abruzzese from a missal selection and the other half with guyot from a clonal selection. The family began to enhance the original genetic heritage of the vines planted in the 1960s. In addition to Loreto Aprutino, Ciavolich has a 15-hectare vineyard in Pianella where mostly Montepulciano (d’Abruzzo) is grown and Pecorino and Pergola Abruzzese (since 2000).

Today, the estate is owned and operated by Chaira Ciavolich, who has modernized the winery and winemaking process while holding on to the DNA of her ancestors. The wines are straightforward and clean, with a deep spirit. They follow a sustainable approach to keep the agricultural, vinicultural, and historical heritage intact to continue passing it on to future generations. Their wine production uses stainless steel, oak, concrete, and terracotta amphora. Some of their wines are born and live in one material; others are held in one and later blended.
